the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver. London: Printed
for Benj. Motte, 1726.2 volumes, 8vo (129 x 186 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait by Sheppard after Sturt (second state); 6 engraved plates. Nineteenth-century polished calf gilt, red and black morocco spine labels, board edges and turn-ins gilt, edges gilt, by Francis Bedford; quarter morocco slipcase.
FIRST EDITION OF SWIFT'S MASTERPIECE, Teerink State A, with the frontispiece portrait of Gulliver in second state on paper with vertical chain lines, and with the legend around the frame. Swift's work has long been considered the epitome of satirical fable writing and has also become a classic tale for children over the years. Written in Ireland, probably between 1720 and 1725, Swift brought the finished manuscript to England with him when he left Dublin for London in March 1726. Prior to publication Swift had acknowledged his authorship of Gulliver's Travels among his friends, but even after it appeared on 28 October 1726 he maintained the pretense to the public of having had no hand in it.
"In every form the book was a success. Revised, abridged, and translated editions followed in their hundreds, and within a short time Lilliputians, Brobdingnagians, and Yahoos entered the English vocabulary, and the name of Gulliver became as widely recognized as it remains today" (Grolier, One Hundred).
Condition: Spines skillfully rebacked preserving original spines. Closed tear on upper margin of A2 and L1 in Vol. I (just touching a letter of headline on each side of leaf); two tiny wormholes on title-page and following leaf (not affecting text); gutter margin of frontispiece skillfully renewed at gutter; presumably washed.
