Description
Theodore Roosevelt. The Winning of the West. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1900.4 volumes, 4to (252 x 165 mm). With a full folio sheet of Roosevelt's original manuscript, folded and partially inlaid to a preliminary leaf in Vol. I; 5 folding maps and 103 plates with captioned tissue guards. Publisher's dark green three-quarter morocco gilt, spines in four compartments, with three raised bands, gilt-lettered and -ruled in two, marbled paper-covered boards, top edge gilt, others uncut; original ribbon page markers.
LIMITED 'DANIEL BOONE' EDITION, number 81 of 200 sets, containing a leaf of Roosevelt's original manuscript for this work.
Following political defeats and the loss of half his capital in a ranching venture in North Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt began writing his ambitious history of the conquest of the American West in 1888, and first published in 1889. The limited Daniel Boone edition was published the following year to capitalize on his campaign for the vice-presidency.
The manuscript leaf included in this set, which folds out to an overall size of 14 x 8 ½ inches, contains over 200 words, written in ink on the recto of a full sheet of ruled paper, with numerous deletions and revisions. It comprises text from the first chapter of volume 2, entitled "The War of the Northwest, 1777-78," which appears printed on pp. 14-15, where Roosevelt recounts the troubles and treaties with the Southern Indians. The manuscript begins: "The Georgians knew that the Indians with whom they treated had no power to surrender the lands; but all they wished was some shadowy color of title, that might serve as an excuse for their seizing the coveted territory. On the other hand the Creeks, loudly though they declaimed against the methods of the Georgian treaty-makers, themselves shamelessly disregarded the solemn engagements which their authorized representatives made with the United States. Moreover their murderous forays on the Georgian settlers were often as unprovoked as were the aggressions of the brutal Georgia borderers..."
Condition: Some minor sunning to spines; light rubbing and wear along joints and extremities; touch of wear to corner tips; minor wear to marbled paper along board edges. Overall, a very fine set, exceptionally clean internally.
References: Howes R-433 ("aa").
Provenance: Mrs. Ellen Wright-Dewey, formerly of Haverford PA (typed letter of provenance to the present owner from Jerry Gingras of Smith House Books & Antiques, 27 October 2013).
