Description
In 1948, Two Strangers Trade Cufflinks at the Army-Navy Game. In 1968, the Cufflinks Travel to the Moon.
Apollo 8 Flown Mismatched Pair of Cufflinks Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot James Lovell. One U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis) cufflink made by Krementz and a matching (in size and shape) U.S. Military Academy (West Point) cufflink, also by Krementz, both with appropriate insignia. These were flown on man's first trip to the moon in December 1968. Both in very fine condition with minor wear.This is a unique and poignant story. It is best told by James Lovell in his signed Letter of Certification accompanying this lot: "These cufflinks have a unique history. When I was a plebe at the United States Naval Academy, I met a West Point plebe at the 1948 Army-Navy football game. During our brief encounter I traded my Naval Academy cufflink for his Military Academy cufflink. I never got his name. Years later I was Ed White's back-up pilot for the Gemini 4 flight. During breakfast Ed told the story about trading cufflinks with an unknown Midshipman at the 1948 Army-Navy football game. I said 'That was me!' We both agreed it is a small world. Ed White was killed in the Apollo 1 fire. To honor our friendship I carried my set of cufflinks on the Apollo 8 space flight."
