Jedediah Paine: Last Surviving Appomattox Witness Archive.3-ring binder that contains ephemera related to Lieutenant Colonel Jedediah Chase Paine (1840-1926), the last surviving Union veteran who was present at the surrender of General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox Court House. Includes photos of Paine, newspaper clippings, a 14-page typescript reminiscence titled "Appomattox by Jedidiah C. Paine A Former Staff Officer of Major-Gen. Ord", a similar 12-page typescript titled "From Bull Run to Warrenton", similar 8-page typescript titled "Remembrances of the War", similar 6-page typescript titled "First Ironclad Battle", various correspondence and signed articles, May 1861 manuscript order for Paine to muster in as a quartermaster sergeant, family trees and histories (related to Thomas Paine, and a Mayflower descendant), July 1861 manuscript ordering Paine to accompany new recruits to N. Y., a July 1861 handwritten recruiting broadside or handbill, June 1865 promotion certificate signed by Edwin Stanton, military records and assorted veteran-related imprints. Paine enlisted in the 57th New York Volunteer Infantry [Zouaves], was a Chief Signal Corps officer who was particularly adept at decoding enemy message and served on the staff of four generals. We count six documents that date from the start of the war until June 1865. From the Don Limpert Collection.
