Description
Remington UMC US 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol, Made in 1918 for the US Military.Serial no. 9686, 5-inch barrel, .45 ACP. Blued finish with checkered two-piece diamond pattern grips. Right side of slide reads MODEL OF 1911 / U.S. ARMY CALIBER 45, left side with known patent dates and the striking REMINGTON UMC logo. Inspector marks present. Two-tone magazine with lanyard loop present.
Note: Remington made slightly less than 20000 of these pistols before the contract was canceled in 1919 and they are only rarely found on the collector market. Remington was involved in making many other weapons for the US military and collectors surmise that the company failed to properly polish their 1911 production which caused a premature loss of finish, often the blue comes off in flakes, leaving in a very unattractive blotchy appearance even with 80% or more blue. Comparatively, few Remington UMC guns actually wear evenly like Colts, Springfields, or the products of WWII era manufacturers. This specimen was made in 1918 and likely made it to France. All of the components are Remington UMC, including the important barrel, grips, and magazine. A very attractive example that can be had for a bargain compared to many other Remington UMC 1911s.
Condition: Fine to excellent as refinished. Light thinning to bluing overall, but very attractive. Handling wear mostly to edges and high traffic areas. Grips good, with moderate wear. Action good, bore good.
