Carlton McCarthy, editor. Four Bound Pamphlets Containing Contributions to a History of the Richmond Howitzer Battalion. Richmond: Carlton McCarthy & Co., 1883-1886. Octavo. 84; 304 64; 64 pages. Four issues with original printed wrappers bound-in to a modern three-quarter leather binding over cloth. Titles stamped in gilt on the spine.The Richmond Howitzer Company of the 1st Regiment of Volunteers was founded on November 9, 1859, by George Wythe Randolph, a grandson of Thomas Jefferson, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a Richmond lawyer. After electing Randolph its first captain, the company, which was recruited from elite Richmond circles, marched to Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia), to help provide security during John Brown's trial and subsequent execution. During the war the unit served at the Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Petersburg and many other notable campaigns. They surrendered with Lee at Appomattox.
Condition: Exterior fine. Original pamphlets with edge wear and loss to the original wrappers. Pages are remarkable clean.
