Description

"Just one damn thing after another"

George S. Patton: Warm ALS to His Father, 1913.

Three pages of a bifolium on Mounted Services School letterhead, 5 ½ x 7-inches, Fort Riley, Kansas, January 19, 1913. A warm letter written to his father George S. Patton, Sr. The letter reads in full:

"Dear Papa: I saw in the paper that it has been cold in California, I hope it has not frozen the oranges again. It is really delightful here I went hunting to day and it was too hot for the leather coat I was wearing. Flipps and the gray hound were out together. Flip startled a rabbit and made such that he scared the other away. We have finished blacksmithing it was pretty hard work though I liked it very well. I have revised the drill regulations and have secured nearly all the pictures. The olive oil came also and is fine thanks very much for sending it. How do you like the new machine and does it work well? I had intended writing you a long letter but really there does not seem much to talk about. My but has been very tender since I got back but is about acclimated now so there is little to bother me. I like it here very well though just at this time of year there is nothing to do except work and I don't find time for that. Here it seems 'Just one damned thing after another'. We are all very well, with love to all Your devoted son, George S. Patton."

Given the date of this letter, it may have been written while Patton was attending the French Cavalry School in Saumur, France and studying fencing under the French master-at-arms Adjutant Clery. It was here he developed ideas that would lead to his famed M1913 Patton saber.

Condition: Slight toning to the paper with a 1 ½-inch split in the folds, otherwise a bold, bright and legible letter in excellent condition.
