Description
WWII 48-Star Flag and Commission Pennant From Estate of the Commanding Officer of the USS LCI (L) 697, Present at the Landings of Leyte in the Philippines.The USS LCI (L) 697 was a large amphibious infantry landing craft commissioned on June 21, 1944. The ship was designed to carry approximately 200 officers and men and had a crew of roughly 25 men. The ship participated in the landing assault on Leyte and subject to Japanese kamikaze attacks. The ship was commanded by Lt. Jg. Leslie Ruben Hare of Middlesboro, Massachusetts and the flag and commissioning pennant are accompanied by a copy of the roster of the ship's crew, a black and white print of the officers and men of the ship and a notarized letter of provenance signed by Hare's daughter.
The lot includes: 1) 48-star U.S. flag, approximately 44 x 72-inches, with machine-sewn stars and stripes. Four metal grommets are on the hoist end. 2) Wool, machine sewn, approximately 2 ½-inches x 44-inches. Seven stars.
Condition: 1) Frayed at the fly end with honest wear from use, otherwise in good condition. 2) Tattered from actual use.
