Massive WWII U.S. 48-Star Flag Flown Over the Marine Barracks in Washington, D. C. and Given to U.S.M.C. Four-Star General Thomas Holcomb Upon His Retirement, 1944. From the Dr. Clarence Rungee Collection.

Cotton, multipiece construction with printed stars, stenciled "GUARANTEED FAST COLORS / CAPITOL" on the hoist, 10 x 15-feet.

Thomas Holcomb (1879-1965) was a distinguished Marine Corps officer, and the first to achieve the rank of general. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines during WWI, taking part in the Third Battle of Aisne, Chateau-Thiery, Soissons, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, a Meritorious Service Citation, Purple Heart and the French Legion of Honor. Between the wars he commanded the Marine Corps Barracks at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, commanded the Marine Detachment at Peking, China with stops along the way for attending the Naval War College and Army War College. In 1936 he assumed the office of Commandant of the Marine Corps from which he retired in 1943. Accompanied with an inventory form from Dr. Clarence Rungee's Flag Heritage Foundation.

Condition: Modest storage stains, a few small holes, 18-inch repair to the hoist end corner. Very good.
