Description
USS Portland Cruiser CA-33: 48-Star Flag.5' x 9.5' cotton hoisting flag, hoist marked "U S S Portland CA33 ENS 5 Valley Forge Flag Co. Spring City, Penna. 5 x 9 1/2 FT. Cotton". Two brass grommets. Sold with "Inventory Form" issued by the Flag Heritage Foundation of Lexington, Massachusetts. Ex: Dr. Clarence Rungee Collection. The Portland (1932-1946) saw extensive action during WWII, including the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal and Leyte Gulf, among others.
Condition: Some scattered stains, small "flea bite" at top of canton, a few holes, rips and areas of loss on bottom red stripe. Strong colors.
