Description

Rare Bowie by J. English &?Hubers.
Circa 1830s. 9-7/8"?clip point blade marked J. ENGLISH?& HUBERS and on reverse PHILADELPHIA 2, 14-3/4"?overall. One piece ebony handle of swelled form with fine checkering on each face, tang peened over washer at butt end of handle. Flat brass guard with rounded ends. Slight belly sharpened into the blade which shows only light spotting, difficult-to-see crack in handle with a small piece missing. Excellent.

The unusual checkered handle appears to be original to the knife, the only English &?Hubers knife of its type. The lack of English &?Hubers' "Sheffield Works" marking may indicate production before or after English &?Hubers occupation of the Sheffield Works in Germantown, Pennsylvania. The "2" marking is indicative of the firm's 10" blade model, which this knife is consistent with.
