Exceptional Watercolor Portrait of Major General Godfrey Weitzel, in Charge of the Surrender of Richmond, Virginia.
Artist unknown. View area 10 x 12 ¾-inches; framed and matted under class to an overall size of 19 x 22-inches. Weitzel is depicted in his Major General's uniform, seated with his arm on a table next to a window. German-born Godfrey Weitzel (1835-1884) attended West Point and graduated in the class of 1855. He commanded XVIII and XXV Corps during the Civil War. He was brevetted several times for gallant and meritorious service. He died in Philadelphia of typhoid fever in 1884.
