Description

Roger Chaffee Autograph Letter and Autograph Note Signed. Both originally written to his parents in 1965 while he was in astronaut training, as follows:
(1) One page, 8.5" x 11" plain stationery, July 24, 1965, Houston. It reads, in part: "Dear Folks, Martha's watching the Miss Universe/ contest so I thought I would start a/ letter. First, don't change any of your/ travel plans, I won't be busy doing/ this flight [Gemini 4]. We have 3 new CapComs/ for this one.../ We are trying to give/ everyone a crack at it for the experience/ that they get.../ We spent most of the day around the house.../ Tomorrow will probably be/ pretty much the same, but add/ church in the morning." Not signed. On the verso, his wife Martha wrote a letter the next evening (Sunday). It reads, in part: "We had a very full day. After/ Sunday school & church we hit the/ yard again.../ Roger has two trips next week, After/ all he's been home a whole week now.../ Our love,/ Roger Martha Sheryl Steve [all in her hand]".
(2) On the back of a mailed postcard from Reykjavik, Iceland July 1965. It reads, in full: "Dear Folks/ Sun afternoon and we/ are going to the big city/ of Reykjavik for a press/ conference and reception./ Tomorrow we leave for/ the central hill of the/ island where we will camp/ out while we study the/ geology. It was snowing/ there yesterday./ Love/ Rog".
