Description

Silver English Pocket Watch Given to John C. Hays by S. M. Swenson, 1840. Silver case. 53 mm. Porcelain dial. Gold-plated movement marked "O. Field Manchester". Numerous service proofs on the inside case. Working condition. Attached to a heavy silver watch chain with English marked locket fob (empty) and the winding key. Engraved on the back of the watch with the inscription: "Presented to / John C. Hays / from / S. M. Swenson / 1840". Brief mention is made of Swenson in Walter Prescott Webb's book The Texas Rangers: A Century of Frontier Defense. On page 85 Webb writes in part: "Colt found a poor market for his new weapons, including a revolving rifle. In some manner a few of the revolvers found their way to Texas and fell into the hands of Jack Hays and his Rangers in San Antonio. One account has it that they were brought to Texas by S. M. Swenson, a merchant who was a friend of Sam Houston."

Condition: Very good. Shows signs of honest and respectful use. Working as of the time of this writing.
