Colt Single Action Army Revolver Inscribed to Baby Doe
Tabor.Serial no. 97509, 44-40 caliber, 5-inch barrel. Left side of barrel marked in italic" PRESENTED TO BABY BY THE YZ OUTFIT 1883. Smooth gray patina finish overall with Mother-of-pearl grips.
Note: Baby Doe was born Elizabeth McCourt in 1854 in Wisconsin. She married Harvey Doe in 1877 and divorced in 1880, she then married in 1883 to H.A.W. Tabor, who was a mining baron. That wedding was held in Washington D.C. as H.A.W. Tabor was serving a thirty-day term as Senator and was controversial due to his previous marriage and divorce back home to Augusta Tabor; who did not approve of his decision. Records indicate the even President Chester Arthur attended the wedding. According to records, Horace and Baby Doe made and lost a fortune, he died in poverty in 1899 and she lived alone at the Matchless Mine in Leadville in extreme poverty until her death in 1935 [see Caroline Bancroft's booklet], "Silver Queen". "YZ" brand according to accompanying paperwork; In the year 1886, a brand "YZ" appears, registered in the name of Thomas Briggs, Weld County, Greeley, Colorado and in 1885, a brand Bar YZ appears registered in the name of A.K. Barwise, El Paso County, Lytle, Colorado.
Together with extensive research related to the history and previous ownership of the Colt. Highlights include; 1) Colt Factory letter from 1959 stating gun originally blued, 44/40, barrel and type of stocks "not listed", sold and shipped to Hartley & Graham, NY, NY August 31, 1883 in a shipment of fifty. 2) The State Historical Society of Colorado letters to Robert White, MD regarding info on Baby Doe and the YZ branding inquiry. 3) Colorado Cattlemen's Association regarding the "YZ" brand. 4) Signed copy of the book titled, Silver Queen, The Fabolous Story of Baby Doe Tabor by Caroline Bancroft. 5) Pamphlet titled, Augusta Tabor, Her Side of the Scandal, also by Caroline Bancroft. 6) Various correspondence letters and ephemera related to the State of Colorado, The Colorado Magazine and The Brand Book related to Tabor.
Condition: Good as presented. Smooth gray patina present overall with patches of pitting. Faint traces of a possible period silver finish present. Barrel shortened to 5-inches but does not affect inscription. Grips complete but with stress wear and some splitting. Moderate period repair to bottom right panel.
