Description
Pair of California Style Spurs Owned by Captain Tom Hickman, Texas Ranger.Nicely decorated inserts to one side of each spur, ten point rowels measuring 1 1/2-inches. Sold together with nicely tooled brown leather straps marked TAN 2789. Old paper inventory tag attached to strap reads OWNED BY CAP. TOM HICKMAN, TEX RANGER. Back of tag reads HUFF [possibly previous owner as stated in handwritten receipt included in sale]. This particular pair sold at A&S Auctions in 2020 and correspondence from previous owner and auction house state these spurs came out of the Ernie Davis collection, a well known spur collector from South Texas.
Together with handwritten paper detailing the chain of custody of one pair of spurs made in California and used by Tom Hickman. Stating; Sold by / Mr. Prayter / To A.W. Hunter / 207 Fain St. /Duncanville Texas 75116 / and Sold to / O.R. Huff / 1705 Lagonda Ave. / Forth Worth Texas 76106 / April 1 - 1972. Other correspondence included are photocopy of email between A&S auctions, auction invoice receipt and a photocopy State of Texas Warrant of Authority and Descriptive List related to Tom R. Hickman.
Thomas R. Hickman (1886-1962) was a distinguished Texas Ranger known for his leadership in law enforcement during the early 20th century. Appointed as a Ranger in 1919, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming captain of Company B, where he played a key role in policing North Texas oil boom towns, bank robberies, and interstate disputes, including the 1931 Red River Bridge War. He was instrumental in handling high-profile cases, such as the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery in Cisco. After leaving the Rangers in 1935, he continued serving in law enforcement and later chaired the Texas Public Safety Commission until his death. His legacy is honored at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.
Condition: Fair, mottled gray patina overall, patches of pitting present. Straps with wear and cracking, otherwise ok.
