Description
Rare Special Texas Ranger Badge Of Retired Captain Frank Probst, Coleman, Texas.1 5/8-inches diameter. Pierced at center to form five-pointed star motif. Border stamped: FRANK PROBST, at top center, the center stamped: TEXAS, and bottom center stamped: RANGER. Letters with black filler. With ostrich leather case gold-embossed: Capt. Frank Probst, and, Texas Ranger. The case containing badge, as well as I.D. card issued by Texas Dept. of Public Safety to: Special Texas Ranger. Expiration on card, January 1, 1983. Sold along with letter from Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, signed Frank W. Latham, Jr., and dated February 23, 1984.
Please note: Letter on Texas Ranger Hall of Fame letterhead indicates that upon retirement, "Rangers are eligible to be Special Texas Rangers", and are given badge such as that made for Frank Probst. I.D. card, with Ranger Probst's photograph in color, gives various details, such as address, height, weight, etc. Letter also indicates that the leather badge case "was made by prisoners at the Texas State Correctional facility." And that collector/writer of letter Frank W. Latham, Jr., had "obtained these items from the curator of the Texas Ranger Museum and Hall of Fame, here in Waco, Mr. Gaines deGraffenreid. By the way, there is a very good article on Capt. Probst's career in the book: The Pictorial History of the Texas Rangers, published by YO Press, Mountain Home, Texas, edited by Mr. Charles Schreiner."
Condition: Very Good. Moderate patina from silver tarnishing. Ostrich leather case and Probst's I.D. fine, latter fading in color.
