U.S. POLICE, BALTO MARKED.
Rare Colt Model 1851 Percussion Revolver Inscribed to Baltimore
Police.Serial no. 107395 [frame, barrel, triggerguard and butt] and 7395 [cylinder], .36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch octagonal barrel marked ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA. Brass cone front sight, Originally blued finish with walnut grips. Bottom of grip butt marked U.S. POLICE, BALTO [for Baltimore]. Research shows guns were issued to Baltimore City Police officers; also J.C. Grubb of Philadelphia has entries of Colt, including pocket models, army models and navy models being purchased by the US in the second half of 1861. Chapter XXIII, from sessions of the U.S. Congress from July 27, 1861 reads "An Act to provide for the Payment of the Police organized by the United States for the City of Baltimore.....the sum of one hundred thousand dollars."
Together with factory letter from Colt confirming configuration. Gun was in a shipment of 50 guns to J.C. Grubb & Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 9, 1861. Also included with the gun is photocopies of historical research information of the period when these guns would have been issued, including paperwork from the previous auction who sold this gun, along with City of Baltimore Police entries and U.S. Congress Sessions [all photocopies].
Condition: Very good to fine. Gun mostly a silver brown patina, with strong traces of case-hardening to frame, hammer and loading lever. Some scattered spots of rust and patina present. Frontstrap and backstrap with good mellow brass patina. Rear of cylinder with some moderate wear. Marred screws. Grips ok, with visible repair to right panel and some chips [loss] to heel and toe. Action tight and crisp, bore fair.
