Description

Apollo 11 Crew-Signed Type I Insurance Cover with NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club Cachet. A philatelic cover, 6.5" x 3.625", with the "Apollo 8" 6¢ stamp (Scott #1371) affixed, machine canceled (completely off the stamp) at Houston, Texas, on July 20, 1969, the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The color cachet features the text: "NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club/ Official Commemorative Cover/ First Manned Lunar Exploration" above a colorful moon scene. It is signed to the right in blue felt tip: "Neil Armstrong", "Michael Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". Extremely fine condition.

Since flying to the moon was considered a "high risk" activity by insurance companies, the astronauts would sign a quantity of these covers pre-flight to be left behind for family members to sell in case of a tragic accident. Apollo 11 was the first mission that made use of these covers.
