Civil War Soldier's Letter with Ashby's Cavalry Content by Erastus Hunt of the 7th Indiana Volunteers.

Four pages of a bifolium written in pencil, 5 x 8 inches, "Camp Shields," [Maryland]; March 21, 1862. Hunt writes to Enos Hadley the day before the First Battle of Kernstown, two weeks into the 7th Indiana's march towards Winchester, Virginia. There, they hoped to repulse Stonewall Jackson's army before he could advance further into the Shenandoah Valley. The letter reads, in part:

"I will write you a few lines describing our late march...We turned to Middletown where we arrived about 5 in the am finding there a small force of the enemy where we expected to find a heavy force but when we learned the truth it was the rear guard of Jackson's Army & a pretty heavy guard it was composed of fourteen hundred of Ashby's Cavalry a small force of infantry with 4 pieces of artillery we drove them from Middletown but as they crossed the river they burned the bridge which kept us back until morning...we were soon across & on our way for the dixie boys which we found at Strausburg where they tried to make a stand but no use we rushed on & soon routed them & followed them up close skirmishing only little...

Tuesday the 7th 2nd & 8th Ohio marched 35 miles Wednesday we marched & fought our way 8 or 9 miles...taking possession of a portion of the most beautiful country I ever saw & I cannot see the propriety in falling back & giving them the chance to advance..." With original transmittal cover.
