Description

Civil War Drum of F.W. Kimble, Drummer Co. B, 14th Iowa Infantry Volunteers - With Original Drum Head in Frame.

An Civil War-period field drum measuring approximately 16 1/4-inches in diameter and 13 1/2-inches in height, accompanied by its original drum head, now mounted and framed (24 1/2 x 24 1/2-inches) for preservation and display [incorrectly labeled E.W. Kimble on plaque]. The replaced skin currently on the drum allows it to retain its form, while the original, hand-inscribed head remains an exceptional historical artifact in its own right. The drum head is etched "F.W. KIMBLE / DRUMMER CO. B, 14TH REGT., / IOWA INF. VOLS., WAR OF 1861," commemorating its owner and his service.

Private F.W. Kimble served as a drummer with the 14th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, a regiment engaged in major Western Theater campaigns including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and the Red River Expedition. Drums like this served both musical and command functions, relaying orders across the battlefield and camp, and were often treasured mementos of service.

Condition: Drum in good display condition, with expected wear, age patina, and surface scuffs from handling and service. The original calfskin head, now framed, shows old stitched repairs, tears, and age toning, consistent with 19th-century field use but remains legible and highly evocative. A moving and historically significant relic of Civil War musical and regimental history, with direct identification to a known soldier.
