United States Army Hospital Department.
Cased Civil War Surgical Amputation Kit by Hernstein & Son, New
York.A very nice tiered multi-compartment case set of surgical and amputation instruments, set is almost complete with some vacancies; highlights includes a removable tray with multiple surgical knives such as scalpels and Liston-style examples marked HERNSTEIN & SON along with interchangeable trephine tools. Underneath the tray sits some Liston bone nippers nicely marked U.S.A. / HOSP. DEPT. along various bone chisel and scooping tools. The main lid compartment holds a large amputation knife, bone scrapper and assortment of small tools. Some pieces are marked HERNSTEIN but not all. This compartment has a few vacancies as well Most of the blades and tools are nicely fitted with ebony-style handles, some are checkered. No label inside the lid of the purple-velour lined wooden case. Cased with brass bound highlights and escutcheon reading U.S.A. / HOSP. DEPT. This large set measures 17 by 7-inches and was issued to army surgeons rather than privately purchased equipment.
Hernstein & Son, New York were 19th-century makers of surgical and amputation kits, widely used during and after the American Civil War. Their boxed sets-typically mahogany or walnut with brass fittings-contained saws, knives, and other instruments for battlefield surgery.
Condition: Good to very as presented, with heavy handling of wear and use, some blades and tools have heavy rust and spots present due to storage. Handles with stress cracks and handling wear. We cannot confirm that every tool is original to the set, might have a few substitutions. The wooden case inside with moderate scuffs, some tears, separations. The outer case with expected handling wear and nicks to edges. There is one moderate crack to the lid [lower left area] stable but noticeable. Stress cracks to bottom as well. Key not present.
