 Civil War Era Military Surgical and Amputation Set by Gemrig, C.
1866.A very nice set of surgical and amputation instruments which appear to be only missing a set of scissors and urinary probe by J.G. Gemrig of Philadelphia. Set comprises of tools such as; Bone saw, tourniquet, small trephine saw, surgical knives and a Gigli wire saw. Most tools marked GEMRIG AND GEMRIG / PHILA. Label inside reads MANUFACTURED / BY / J.H. GEMRIG / 109 SOUTH EIGHT ST. / PHILADELPHIA. Multiple compartments present and fitted in red-velour lined partitions. Most instruments stamped GEMRIG or GEMRIG / PHILA. Wooden case measures 16 1/2 by 6 1/4-inches.
Jacob H. Gemrig was a prominent surgical instrument maker based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from around 1840 to 1881. Originally from Germany, he immigrated to the U.S. in the 1830s, bringing with him skills as a cutler (maker of knives and edged tools), which he later applied to crafting medical instruments. His business became a significant supplier of surgical sets, especially during the Civil War.
Condition: Fine to excellent, with minimal of wear and use. Minor spots on larger blades as expected. Inside with minor scuffs. Outer wooden case with expected handling wear. Inner label appears to be contemporary. Stress wear to bottom on wood, minor splits. Brass fittings with tarnish and spots.
