Description
Civil War: Incredibly Rare Group Image of Dygert's Independent Company of Sharpshooters (16th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment) With Contemporary Identification of Each Man on the Image Mount, Circa 1864.The image measures 7 ½ x 5 ½-inches, mounted on studio board to an overall size of 11 ¾ x 9-inches. The reverse of the mount bears the studio imprint of Gorman & Jordan, Army Photographers, Alexandria, Virginia.
The names of 26 soldiers are arranged by descending rank along the border of three sides of the image. Some of the names appear to have been refreshed at some point. The image is taken outdoors and tents are visible in the background. The men are posed standing with fixed bayonets on their muskets with hands clasped before them. The commanding officer, 1st Lt. William H. Byrns (misspelled "Burns") is at the left of the group leaning against his sword. Twenty-six of the twenty-seven men are identified. The caption above the image reads "Brady's Sharp Shooters" the later name associated with Dygert's Independent Company.
Condition: The mount suffers moderate browning and scattered stains with some loss to the corners of the mount, however the image remains sharp and in very good condition.
