July 20th, 1864 1st Lieut. Joseph R. Needham.
Inscribed and Historic Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion
Revolver with Original Civil War Era Documents.Serial no. 18771, .36 caliber, 6 1/2-inch round barrel. Top of barrel reads ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA. Originally blued finish with case-hardened frame. Brass backstrap inscribed in script JULY 20TH, 1864 / 1ST LIEUT, JOSEPH R. NEEDHAM. Left side of frame stamped COLTS / PATENT and 36CAL to triggerguard. Patent date present on cylinder flutes. Gun manufactured in 1863. Gun comes with a black holster with supple leather. Also included is a binder containing original and photocopy documents. Original documents include; discharge as sergeant to accept a commission, 1st Lieut. Commission, final discharge, a 30 day leave as a released prisoner of war and a medical document of continued disability. Note: This gun was obtained from a David Condon Inc, Antique Arms Auction on January,16, 1999 by the current consignor. Cut-out cover and the catalog page are provided for reference. Two good quality copies of photographs from Needham, furnished by the Dept. of the Army from 1999, as requested by current consignor.
Joseph B. Needham served as a First Lieutenant in Company H of the 4th Vermont Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. During the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, on May 12, 1864, he was wounded. On June 18, while leading an advance against the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, Virginia, the regiment was overwhelmed by Confederate forces, resulting in the capture of 137 enlisted men and several officers, including Needham. He was held as a prisoner of war until his release on December 12, 1864. After returning to his unit, Joseph R. Needham continued his service until the regiment was mustered out in July of 1865.

Condition: Fine for this model. Gun still retains between 20-30% thinning blue with balance now, an overall smooth dark finish. Traces of case-hardening present. Grips fine with varnish present, light bumps with some nicks and mars overall. Holster with moderate handling wear, some crazing. Action good, bore ok.
