Description
Galveston, Texas Civil War Amnesty Oath.One printed page, engrossed in ink, 9 7/8" x 8", Galveston, Texas, July 26, 1865. A scarce Trans-Mississippi oath of allegiance numbered "675" at top, and signed "Jos. W. Rice" by a former Confederate. It reads, "I Joseph W. Rice do solemnly swear in the presence of Almighty God that I will hereafter faithfully defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of states there under; and that I will in like manner abide by and support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the Emancipation of Slavery, so help me God." Signed by Captain and Provost Marshal "H. Beard".
Condition: Flattened folds, unevenness at top edge, small edge nick at lower left. Else in fine condition.
