Description

Civil War Soldier's Letter by Philander McQuiston of Company D, 47th Ohio Infantry with Skirmishing and Bushwhacker Content.

12 pages on three patriotic bifolia, 5 x 7 7/8 inches; "Camp Anderson, Near Hawknest, Fayett[e] Co., Va.;" November 9, 1861. McQuiston writes to his sister describing the hardships suffered by his company as they engaged in operations around Fayette County (now West Virginia) to push Confederate forces out of the region. Content includes an account of skirmishing at Sewell Mountain, bushwhackers, and the capture of 265 head of cattle. McQuiston begins the letter on November 9, but at the bottom of page four he notes that he had started the letter "some time ago" but was interrupted by orders to march. He writes, in part:

"...if you have seen the rebel account of Sewll Mountain you must not think that we [lost] as many killed as they report for Lieutenant Penberton and ten men of our company was at that old stable where they say they four with a cannon shot I was one of them and did see any cannon balls did not shoot... we then moved forward and we made a turn in the road they fired three shots at from a high hill at our left and another in front of the column. they wounded one calvery man in rear of the column 2 men in 47 regiment Co H of was in the act of changeing his gun from one shoulder to other when the ball struck the but his gun going through the stock and injuring one finger als a buck shot grased his cheek the other one was wounded in his hand the ball passing through it we the halted and sen out some skirmishers it now being near night we stacked and halted for the night our company and Co I was sent on picket to the place were the fireing came from we up there and got suppers and put 16 of our men on 4 standing at a time while the rest lay down... as soon as it was day the column up and a moveing we waited till the coulume had passed and moved across the hills to the road as we came on the top of a hill we discovered a company of on the side of a other one which Capt Wallace thought was a company of the 36 regiment as the was dressed to all appearances and ther was a company of them sent out somewhere in that neghberhood but was not for when we came up to the 36 they had not been that hill so they must have been bushwhackers the rebels saw us crossing the river and run thier cattle and horses to thier rear expecting us to come up in front and they did not know was going to thier till we came to centerville 5 miles then they commence retreating about two o clock on 23 in we passed by or close to thier encampment we gathered up thier cattle and horses we got 265 head of fine cattle... we wounded several bushwhackers and took 6 some say ten prisoners we lost one man killed or wounded so that he died and that one by our own force three wounded by bushwhackers that was off of the loss..."
