Description

Bill Polearm.

Approximately 90-inches overall with an 11-inch bill blade and separate 8-inch spike. The bill blade and spike/hook have a rather ornate crude profile and markings suggesting a blacksmith and/or a craftsman had something to do with it. The head is mounted to the 78-inch wooden shaft via two long iron bands measuring 11-inches and secured by wrought iron round-head rivets or nails. No visible markings apart from the decorations present. A great decorative piece. Note: According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor Book by Stone, "This is one of the earliest weapons mentioned in medieval warfare, and it was especially favored by the Angle-Saxons......It started as an agricultural implement, was modified in many ways for war, and still survives as an agricultural implement in England. See Figure 149 for similar examples.

Condition: Very good as presented. Heavy wear to crude metal. Wooden shaft with scuffs, mars overall. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
