Description

Pike Polearm.

Approximately 95-inches overall with an 10-inch spearpoint blade. The 14 1/2- blade and handle are mounted to the 80-inch octagonal wooden shaft via two long iron bands measuring 7 1/2-inches and secured by wrought iron round-head rivets or nails. No visible markings apart from metal work. A great decorative piece. Note: According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor Book by Stone, Pikes "were the spear of heavy infantry in early times.....The infantry were composed of musqueteers and pikemen, the latter protecting the former while they were reloading their guns" [figure 639]. This one in particular appears to be in the continental style.

Condition: Good to very good as presented. Moderate pitting to blade, metal parts. Wooden shaft with scuffs, minor splits and mars overall. From the Sylver Schaller Collection.
