Description

Set of Five Japanese Yanone Arrowheads, Togari-ya with Chrysanthemum Sukashi.

Five forged steel arrowheads of the togari-ya (pointed) type, each worked in openwork (sukashi) with delicate chrysanthemum motifs at the center of the blade. The pointed triangular outline reflects the functional martial form, yet the chrysanthemum cut-outs elevate these examples firmly into the ceremonial sphere. The chrysanthemum (kiku), emblem of the Japanese imperial house, symbolizes renewal, longevity, and authority, and its inclusion here would have reinforced themes of loyalty and prestige. Each arrowhead is carefully forged with symmetrical lines, the openwork crisply executed, demonstrating the precision of the artisan. While togari-ya were typically practical weapons, the sukashi decoration transforms these into presentation pieces, likely intended for ritual archery or as offerings at a shrine rather than battlefield use. The examples have tips ranging from 2 ¼-inches to 3-inches and are 6 ¾ to 10-inches overall.

Condition: All examples with a dark patina, otherwise in very good condition.
