Description

Civil War Naval-Related Cartoon. This 15" x 12" lithographed cartoon seems to take issue with critics of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and his under-secretary Gustavus Fox. It is titled "The Modern Quixote and Squire Sancho. 'The War of Ormuzd and Ahriman in the 19th Century.'" A monument in the form of a cannon, cannonball, bust of Welles and windmill blades in the shape of ironclads appears to the left. We recognize New Hampshire Senator John Hale in the character of Sancho Panza. The print has some minor ink stains, vertical folds (two abrasions or areas of loss at one fold) and short border tears, repaired on verso with archival tape.
