Description

Franklin Pierce: New Hampshire Democrats Salt River Cartoon. This 21" x 14" lithographed cartoon, published in 1852 by Hogarth, Jr. of New Hampshire, is titled "The Old Hunkers of New Hampshire Going Up Salt River." The Democratic candidate for President, Franklin Pierce, is their guide and tow-path boy. We do not recognize any of the occupants of the doomed vessel, but they are identified in pencil and seem to be New Hampshire politicians (Attwood, Gucher, Ayer, Foyer, Atherton, Wilkens, Pictney, Sambo, the Devil). Pierce is labeled a "Colored Beverage Barker"). Item has numerous tears, ink stains, damp stains and fold lines, and has been backed with rice paper.
