Description

Andrew Jackson: Anti-John Quincy Adams Cartoon. During the campaign of 1828, a series of "Coffin Handbills" or broadsides were distributed that depicted Andrew Jackson as a murderer who killed personal rivals and unfairly executed soldiers during time of war. These were the brainchild of editor Peter Binns. Binns is shown here, struggling under a pile of coffins, with Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams protruding from two of them. It is titled: "The Pedlar and his Pack or the Desperate Effort, an Over Balance." It is 17.5" x 11", hinged to a board, brilliantly hand-colored, with loss on the border and discoloration, as shown. We are selling an authentic copy of the "Coffin Handbill" in the signature session of this sale.
