Description

Lincoln County Wars: Catharina Fritz Photographs. Catharina Fritz was the wife of Charles Fritz of Lincoln County, New Mexico. She was the sister-in-law of Col. Emil Fritz, partner of Lawrence Murphy in the commercial operation known as "The House", first at Fort Stanton and subsequently at Lincoln, New Mexico. She had several children, including Caroline Fritz who married James J. Dolan in July 1879. Dolan joined L. G. Murphy & Co. as a clerk, but became a partner after Col. Fritz's death. Charles Fritz, the older brother of Col. Emil C. A. Fritz, married Catharina Knebling at Montrose, Pennsylvania on May 5, 1856. On his brother's urging, Charles Fritz moved his family to Lincoln County, New Mexico in 1873, settling on Emil Fritz's Spring Ranch. Catharina died at her Spring Ranch home on January 2, 1884. These are the only known portraits of Catharina Fritz in original photographs. One is a carte-de-visite and the other is a period 6" x 10" enlargement of the CDV.
