Description
California Republic: Early and Graphic Flag. This 33" x 21" cotton flag represents the "California Republic". Like Texas, California was initially a republic before statehood. After its admission to the Union in 1850, the California Republic flag continued to be manufactured for display in public buildings. The later examples tend to be made with silk or satin, or some synthetic material. This one is cotton and has a woodcut illustration of the golden bear signed Sadler. Based on construction and material, we date this 1875-1890. It has some light damp stains and a few ink stains. It was previously framed using narrows strips of tape around the reverse perimeter which have since been removed, leaving a slightly tacky residue. It is a rare souvenir of frontier days and the old West.Auction Info
