Description

William McKinley Autograph Letter Signed, written on behalf of Ida McKinley to their niece, Kittie Endsley Mathews. Two pages (rectos only of two sheets), 5.5" x 7.75", n.p., July 8, 1896. Just prior to launching his "front porch campaign", presidential hopeful McKinley writes of his hectic summer plans: "Our plans for the summer are very uncertain. We have been jugging about so much that we feel that 'home' is awful nice. We go to one of the Regimental Camps the 27 of July for a few days... and Sept 17 to Chattanooga on the occasion of the dedication of the Natl Cemetary [sic]. These are my plans made up to date, Ida thinks is is very uncertain about our getting to Somerset... Most cordially yours Ida McKinley by Wm McK." Accompanied by the original transmittal addressed in McKinley's hand. There are no postal markings, indicating that the letter was hand delivered. Letter has been trimmed, affecting the very top of the date line, with a tiny tear at the top of each page, a few pinholes, and some wear to folds. Date is ink-smeared, but otherwise very legible.
