Description
George Armstrong Custer: A Fine 19th-Century Wool Horse Blanket Which Had Belonged To His Father E. H. Custer. Emanuel Henry Custer (1806 - 1892) was a Michigan farmer and blacksmith. He apparently enjoyed some success in business, as he was able to afford private schooling in Ohio for young George in preparation for West Point. Religiously devout, he is said to have named his son after a minister named George Armstrong. Given his father's professions, it seems reasonable to assume that George's interest and skill in horsemanship must have been inherited from his father.While the precise provenance of this blanket has at least temporarily disappeared, it descended through the Custer family after having passed from father to son. One can imagine that to Gen. Custer it may well have been a much-cherished remembrance of his father. The excellent condition shows the care taken in its preservation. Measurements 69" x 55".
