Description

Henry Clay: 1844 Campaign Club Membership Book. Very handsome ledger book issued for the "Orange Co. Clay Club". It has a red leather spine and corners with marbled boards, measuring 8" x 10". It contains the reports of four meetings of the Clay Club which was organized on December 20th 1843 in Chelsea [MA]. It stipulates the purpose of the club ("We will do all in our power by honorable means to promote the election of Henry Clay to the next Presidency"), the election of officers and the membership rolls. Meetings from January 9th, February 6th and February 28th are also recorded. There is also a seven-page letter from E. P. Walton, Jr. of Montpelier responding to the club's offer of an honorary membership and giving his extended views on the tariff and other issues of the campaign. Binding slightly loose, many blank pages. Some pages deal with genealogy. It makes for an interesting display item and has educational value as well.
