Description

Stephen A. Douglas: Imposing Campaign Ambrotype. Political collectors and photography collectors can meld their interests and attain "collector nirvana" when the two interests intersect. Such is the case with this quarter-plate hand-tinted ambrotype of the Northern Democratic nominee for President in 1860, Stephen Arnold Douglas. We believe it was copied from a lithograph which was, in turn, based on a daguerreotype taken in 1854, the year of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. It is housed in a very nice thermoplastic case with unusual hinges. The condition is excellent.
