Description

Andrew Johnson: Three Satirical Imprints. We offer three humorous booklets issued in the Reconstruction period. The first is a 46-page booklet measuring 4.5" x 7.5" titled "Nasby's Life of Andy Jonson With a True Pictorial History of his great Stumping Tour Out West". It was written by humorist Petroleum V. Nasby (David Ross Locke), published by Jesse Haney & Co. of New York, and pokes fun at Johnson's disastrous "Swing Around the Circle" in 1866. The book is replete with cartoons. There are two dampstains, as shown, which extend into the text. The second booklet is similar in size and number of pages, but is titled "Reconstruction". It was written by humorist Orpheus C. Kerr (Robert Henry Newell), published by the American News Company of New York, and has many cartoon illustrations. The covers are somewhat brittle with minor chipping. The third volume is a 24-page satirical booklet by Petroleum V. Nasby titled "The Impendin Crisis uv the Dimocracy." It gives reasons "... why every Demokrat who loves his party shood vote for Seemore and Blare, and agin Grant and Colfax." It was published by Miller, Locke & Co. of Toledo, Ohio. There is only one illustration (that on the cover). A prospectus for the Toledo Weekly Blade is included. It was published in 1868 and includes a scathing dedication to Horatio Seymour referencing the burning of Negro orphan asylums. These are all rare imprints which seldom appear on the market.
