Description

Zachary Taylor: Steeple Mantel Clock. This wooden clock manufactured by William S. Johnson of New York likely saw use during the presidential campaign of 1848. The glass insert in the door has a reverse painting on glass depicting a military bust of Taylor in profile, with an eagle, draped flags and stars. The clock measures 20" tall, 9.5" wide and 3.5" deep. There is scattered loss/pitting in the glass panel, as shown, primarily in the flags and Taylor's hair. It could easily be restored or left as-is. There is also wear on the painted dial. There is one missing brad securing the dial and one missing hinge on the door, as well as a 1.25" strip of missing veneer on the base of the left side. The brass pendulum is included.
