Description

George Washington: A Vintage Plaster Cast of His Life Mask by Jean-Antoine Houdon. At the recommendation of Jefferson and Franklin, the famed French sculptor was selected to do a statue of Washington for the planned capitol. In 1795 he traveled to Mount Vernon to make his life mask, which the artist would take with him to his studio in France to assist in sculpting the final work. The example offered here was taken directly from a first generation copy located in the famous Hutton Collection at Princeton University. It was part of the collection of the late Dr. McComas, who while teaching at Princeton 1909-1927 was permitted to make direct copies from the Hutton Collection. It is in very good condition, with a few minor small surface flakes. 10" x 7.5" by 5".
