Description

George Washington: Period Wax Portrait. Wax portraits were quite popular in the 18th and early 19th century. This example is perhaps the finest one we have seen. It depicts "Gen. George Washington". It is dated 1797 and signed by the artist, G. Rouse. The detail is quite good and we are amazed at the delicacy of the shirt ruffles and ribbon that adorns the General's wig. It measures 8" x 10" and is housed in a 12" x 14" shadow box frame. There is a hairline crack that extends through the lower right-hand corner and part of the aforementioned ribbon.
