Description

Alfred Tennyson. Idylls of the King. London: Edward Moxon & Co., 1859. First edition, later state, 8 pages of unopened "December, 1859" advertisements at front. Octavo. 261 pages. Publisher's green cloth over boards with blindstamping and gilt spine titles. Boards somewhat faded with rubbing and bumped corners. Spine sunned with small tears and loss at ends. Binding loose with some pages separating but held by binding threads. Slightly cocked. Minimal foxing. Bookplate on front pastedown. Handwritten two and a quarter page "Dedication" from "The Poet Laureate to the late Prince Consort" as well as an inscription from Queen Victoria's
obstetrician Charles B. Locock, bart. Generally very good.

More Information:

As "Dedication" was written for the Prince Albert at his passing in 1861 and published as a prefatory addition to The Idylls of the King in 1862, this was presumably added to conform with the complete text of the later edition.
