Description

Ernest Hemingway Signs Birthday Greetings to His Wife Mary, as Vincent Van Gogh

[Ernest Hemingway, association]. Paul Fierens. Van Gogh. Paris: Les Éditions Braun, [1948].

First edition. Inscribed by Hemingway to his wife Mary, on the first page: "Happy Birthday to / Miss Mary from her / friend and admirer / Vincent Van Gogh / Arles 1888 [underlined]." Folio (approximately 14 x 11 inches). [32] pages. With ten full-color mounted plates.

Original wrappers. Binding quite chipped, worn, toned and soiled. A fair copy, but still a charming item with a humorous inscription. Now housed in a custom made chemise and full blue morocco clamshell case with leather onlays of Ernest and Mary Hemingway on the front. Consignor (a noted Hemingway collector and expert) acquired this item during a visit to Cuba, and states it is most likely that this item came from Hemingway's house in Finca Vigia from when he was living in Cuba from 1940 to about 1959.
