Dr. Don Carlos Guffey, a respected physician from Kansas City, was the Hemingway family doctor, delivering both of Hemingway's children (via caesarean section) from his wife Pauline. Guffey was also a bibliophile and was one of the first important collectors of Hemingway's work (including books, letters, and manuscripts). Guffey would have Hemingway write something lengthy and notable about a book's genesis or publication in the books he collected, thus making books from his collection especially desirable.
