Description

A Beautiful First Edition of Twain's Masterpiece

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.

First edition with the following first issue points, per BAL: "Him and another Man" with "88" on p. [13]; "with the was" on p. 57; final leaf blank; and frontispiece with "Heliotype Printing Company" and visible tablecloth. Also, "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on p. [9], a first issue point per MacDonnell (Firsts, p. 31). Title page a cancel; p. 283 on a stub. The final "5" on p. 155 extends below the line, a later issue point in BAL which MacDonnell dismisses as being of no significance as far as issue priority (Firsts, p. 33). Octavo. 366 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Text illustrations by E. W. Kemble.

Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in black and gilt on front cover and spine. Expert restoration to the top and bottom of the spine. Very minor foxing to page edges and rear endpapers. Ownership name and "Bought in Boston Mass May 14/85" in pencil on verso of front free endpaper. A beautiful copy of this literary classic in fine condition, housed in a custom gilt-stamped green morocco and marbled paper clamshell case.

BAL 3415. Kevin MacDonnell in Firsts, September 1998 - Vol. 8, No. 9, "Huck Finn, Among the Issue Mongers," pp. 29- 35.
