First edition. Octavo. 193 pages. Frontispiece portrait.

Publisher's full brown paper boards, decorated in black, blue, and red. Rubbed with scuffed bottom edge, rounded corners and chipped spine ends. There is a one-inch split beginning at bottom edge of front joint. Pages mildly toned. Scarce dust jacket with rubbing and edge wear. Large chips to rear panel. A very good copy.

A collection of short stories with an early example of science fiction. "The Red One is a sensitive short story about the worship of an alien artifact by a primitive tribe of headhunters among whom lives a dying Englishman. By the end of the story, both the Englishman and the readers learn that the aborigines have more in common with Europeans than anyone could have imagined" (Gunn, p. 280).
