Cambridge: Macmillan & Co., 1855. First edition, first issue. Three small octavo volumes. [2, ads], viii, 303, plus 16-page publisher's catalog dated February 1885; vi, 356; vi, 373. Publisher's gilt- and blind-stamped "Cambridge blue" binding. Pale yellow endpapers. All half-titles present. Bindings a bit bumped and rubbed with darkened spines; hinges of Volumes II and III just barely starting. Inked name "Ashburton" on front pastedown of Volume III; also with "Melchet Court, Romsey" rubber stamp to title page of Volume III. Each volume in its own chemise, all slipcased together in a custom gilt-stamped box. For this book, in this notoriously fragile binding, the set is in near fine condition. The first novel published by Macmillan; one of the bestselling books of the nineteenth century. 1,250 copies printed (Sadleir 1340).
