With Eight Handsome Full-Color Biblical Fore-Edge Paintings

[Fore-Edge Paintings]. [Richard Mant, editor]. The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of The United Church of England and Ireland. Oxford: J. Parker and C. and J. Rivington, 1825.

Third edition. Quarto (approximately 11.5 x 8.75 inches). 2, lxxii, 966 pages.

Publisher's full dark brown pebbled morocco, covers ruled and paneled in blind, spine tooled and ruled in blind, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, yellow coated endpapers. With the bookplate of Baldwin J. P. Bastard on the front pastedown. Spine very slightly sunned, some rubbing to edges, light dampstaining to endleaves. Overall, fine.

This charming book has eight biblical scenes that are finely painted in color on the edges of the text block as follows: on the fore-edge are Cain fleeing the Lord after murdering Abel, the building of Noah's Ark, the Last Supper, and Christ being nailed to the cross; on the top edge are The Resurrection of Christ, and Eve showing Adam the Tree of Knowledge; on the lower edge are Moses bringing the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai, and the Baptism of Christ by St. John. It is unusual to have so many fore-edge paintings on a single volume.
